The best way to prevent ice dams is to keep your roof constantly cold. You want to block air leaks leading to the attic and increase the insulation on your attic floor. You can also install a soffit and ridge vent system. Don’t try to chip away at the ice and shovel snow off the edge of your roof. It’s dangerous and can damage your roof.
